Scutching Knife or Flax Knife
A wooden implement used in processing flax for spinning. The knife was used to break the woody stem which surrounds the flax fiber. These were hand carved,
painted and used by the man as a "love token" for his wife or bride-to-be. The undecorated
knives were utilitarian.

Distaff
A tool which is attached to the spinning wheel and holds unspun fibers. It is designed to keep fibers untangled and thus ease the spinning process. They were hand carved and used as "love tokens" by a man for his wife or wife-to-be.
